Hopefully, every teacher shares the desire to inspire students. It doesn’t always work out. It isn’t always easy to give students the space to explore topics that are personally meaningful to them. Finding a balance between what is considered socially important and what students personally find meaningful is one of the challenges teachers face when striving to create inspiring education. When it comes to math, most people think of doing rows of sums and memorizing incomprehensible rules. That is a type of school math that has little to do with real math. Today’s school math is therefore different from the school math of 1950. Math is much more often about asking the right questions, devising an approach to solve a problem, or modeling a situation.
